FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:                                                                         MAY 26, 2018

WHAT: The National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies (NACCS) Tejas Foco Committee on Mexican American Studies (MAS) Pre-K-12 announces a major Texas statewide action and Protest the Name Change/Keep Mexican American Studies Press Conference. In April, 2018, the Texas State Board of Education (TXSBOE) voted, for the first time in Texas history, to approve an elective course in Mexican American Studies for high school students, but changed the name of this course to Ethnic Studies: An Overview of Americans of Mexican Descent. NACCS Tejas representatives in six cities across the state will simultaneously be conducting a press conference where they will release and read the official NACCS Tejas statement in protest and opposition to this name change, and outline the reasons why the TXSBOE should reverse their decision and keep the course name Mexican American Studies.

Other officials and individuals, including TXSBOE members Ruben Cortez (San Juan), Marisa

  1. Perez (San Antonio), and Erika Beltran (Fort Worth), will also be making statements. This official NACCS Tejas statement will be presented to the TXSBOE members at their next meeting on June 12, 2018 in Austin.
